From a brilliant Mexico City-born winemaker, this is a love letter to Tempranillo in California! This grape with wild versatility can be grown throughout Alta California (referring to California as we know it today, separate from the southern Baja region). The fruit is sourced from exceptional vineyards in Napa, Amador, Paso Robles, and Monterey Counties.  5% of their solera (or older vintage) Tempranillo lots is blended in to feather age into the wine. It's spectacular!

Delicious With

Steak Frites, Spiced Lamb Kofta or Sliders. Lean into the grape's heritage with Jamón Ibérico, smoky chorizo, and patatas bravas (crispy potatoes in spicy tomato sauce). Mushroom & Herb Dishes - spectacular match for creamy wild mushroom risotto.

Their Cred

Orixe Sotelo is a boutique winery founded in 2019 by Gustavo and Jackie Sotelo in Sonoma, California. The name "Orixe" (pronounced o-REE-shay) is derived from the Galician word for "origin," reflecting the couple's deep-rooted connection to Spanish heritage. The surname "Sotelo" traces back to the coastal mountains of Galicia, Spain, symbolizing a bridge between Old World traditions and New World terroirs .

From Mexico City to California's Vineyards:
Gustavo Sotelo's journey into winemaking began in Mexico City, where he was born and raised. Initially pursuing a career in publishing in New York, he discovered a profound connection to his Spanish roots through a Spanish wine course at Instituto Cervantes. This revelation led him to transition into the wine industry, working at esteemed wineries like Etude, Mumm Napa, and White Rock Vineyards. His passion culminated in a pivotal experience at Bodegas Mauro in Ribera del Duero, Spain, where he immersed himself in traditional Spanish winemaking techniques.

A seasoned California winemaker with extensive cellar and viticulture experience. Gustavo apprenticed with some of the top wineries in Napa, Sonoma, and Spain before becoming the head winemaker for SCRIBE Winery. Gustavo is a graduate of Boston University, the UC Davis Viticulture & Enology program, and has received additional certifications from Bordeaux Agro Sciences Université & the Institut de la Vigne et du Vin de l'Université de Bourgogne.

A Vision for Spanish Varietals in California:
At Orixe Sotelo, the focus is on producing wines exclusively from Spanish grape varieties cultivated in California. This approach aims to honor the rich viticultural heritage of Spain while exploring the unique expressions these varietals can achieve in California's diverse climates. The winery's portfolio includes varietals such as Tempranillo, Garnacha, Godello, and Albariño, each selected for their adaptability and potential to thrive in California's terroirs .

Innovative Winemaking Techniques:
Orixe Sotelo distinguishes itself through innovative winemaking practices that blend traditional Spanish methods with modern techniques. One notable example is their "Rosé en Flor," a rosé aged under flor, a natural yeast film traditionally used in Sherry production. This method imparts a distinctive texture and complexity to the wine, setting it apart in the California wine landscape .

A Commitment to Community and Education:
Beyond crafting exceptional wines, Gustavo and Jackie Sotelo are dedicated to fostering inclusivity and education within the wine industry. They aim to provide opportunities for underrepresented communities, particularly within the Latino and farmworker populations, to engage with and learn about winemaking. This commitment reflects their belief in the power of wine to connect cultures and educate future generations .
