A gem Cabernet from an absolute legend, Steve Matthiasson and his wife Jill! Vineyard savants and premier champions of organic and regenerative farming in Napa, Steve and Jill have been transitioning vineyards to healthy environments for over 40 years. They started making their own wines in 2003 and today make what we believe is the best example of classic 1980s-style Napa Cabernet. This style put Napa on the map when it started beating French Bordeaux in blind tastings on the world stage. Elegant, restrained, abundantly perfumed, and clearly from a place, rooted in soil, and only possible from nature.
Delicious With
Pair this classic 1980s-style Napa Cabernet with a simple, high-quality seared ribeye steak. Avoid overly heavy, rich sauces that mask the wine's mature tannins, and opt instead for simple sides like roasted garlic, roasted potatoes, or earthy mushrooms. Top a gourmet burger with a bit of blue cheese or smoked Gouda to draw out the wine's complexity.
Their Cred
Winemaking, at Matthiasson, is a natural extension of farming: preserving bounty, marveling at beauty, and celebrating the great tradition of working with nature for nourishment.
Steve and his wife Jill, both worked for many years in the sustainable agriculture and local food movement. In 2003, they started Matthiasson Wines based on those same values: purity of product, sense of place, respect for land and people, and deliciousness. Today, their small family winery is still proudly independent — no partners or investors — just the vision of Jill and Steve and a passionate, hard-working team. Their independence allows them to farm organically always and to pioneer regeneration constantly.
They grow wines by hand, with reverence and gratitude, striving to bring forth deeply flavorful wines that are refreshing, complement food, and are moderate in alcohol. They cherish familiar varieties like Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon as much as we prize rare others like Ribolla Gialla or Refosco — in all cases classical, delicious, singular expressions that we hope honor their origin and enhance your table.
