L'Aietta | 2017 Brunello di Montalcino
Brunellos are famous for a reason – made with 100% Sangiovese Grosso and can easily aged for 30+ years – these wines are liquid umami! It's difficult to talk about the L'Aietta Brunello di Montalcino without using superlatives, as this is one of the best Brunellos you'll find. A beautiful mix of crushed, stewed berries, fresh forest floor and old leather chairs almost make you feel like you’re in some Italian hunting cabin in the woods. Tons of baking spice, rich black fruit with a vivid ripe sweetness that balances out gorgeous acidity. This wine is drinking beautifully now, and will lie down for at least another 20 years – if you can wait that long.
With Brunello di Montalcino it's best to pair with either complex dishes or with a simple great ingredient. Try with rich sauces, gravy, and condiments, like wild game with preserves, or turkey stuffed with prunes and truffle. Invest in a deliciously marbled dry aged ribeye, simply sear and finish in the oven to perfection. Or try wild mushroom risotto with red wine reduction, we could go on and on...
Winemaker Francesco Mulinari’s dad bought a block of land (steep land, that is) with a neglected vineyard and olive grove on it simply so his family could have picnics back in the 1980s. In 2001, when Francesco was 18 years old, he followed his curiosity and tried his hand at winemaking. Since then he has replanted vines and made a name for himself as an excellent winemaker. Mulinari has drawn much praise for his wines, which are sold at incredible prices compared to many other Brunellos, so it's fair to say that they never stick around for long, particularly because his production is so small (less than 2,000 bottles).
