From a Spanish wine dynasty, this deeply rooted red is finely tuned, with a touch of spice and everything nice. Polished with traditional style, giving this wine a sense of place and history. Made mostly of Mencía, a red grape known almost exclusively to this remote corner of northwestern Spain, this wine is medium bodied with a soft floral and red plum flavor. Great for Pinot Noir fans looking for something cozy.

Delicious With

Especially good with cured meats like corned beef, salami, and pepperoni. The wine's acidity cuts through Iberico ham or Prosciutto and hard sheep cheeses like Manchego. Great with Mushroom risotto or tomato-based dishes, as well as cabbage, onions, bell peppers, and lentils. Mencía's acidity is also perfect with red sauce pizza and all the toppings.

Their Cred

Descendientes de J. Palacios is owned by Ricardo Perez Palacios, the nephew of renowned winemaker Alvaro Palacios, who is known for his great work in the Priorat and assists the family winery. The grapes used come from very old vine plots, aged between 50 and 90 years old. These are low-yielding vines, making the fruit dense and high-quality. The vineyards that give rise to Pétalos del Bierzo are planted mainly on slate floors located on steep slopes. The harvest is all done manually.

Over 90% of the vineyards are planted to Mencía, but they also work with other native grapes varieties including ~3% growing other reds - Alicante Bouschet, Gran Negro, Pan y Carne, Negreda, etc. and ~4% growing white wine grapes - Valenciana, Jerez and Godello.
