Happy Chardonn-yay Day!

Happy Chardonn-yay Day!

Chardonnay is arguably the most famous white wine grape in the world. With an incredible ability to adapt to many environments, today we're celebrating this 'queen' of wine grapes:

Explore the range of Chardonnay with this trio:

  • Unturned Stone | Chardonnay - The classic feel of a rich Chardonnay - although we wouldn't call this one "buttery." It's intensely seductive... vanilla cream and lemon curd drizzled with cooked honey, toasted almond and a little citrus zest.
  • Les Lunes | Macerated Chardonnay - A skin-contact adventure aaaand partially vinified carbonically. It's a wildly addictive adventure with a gorgeous amber hue, a tapestry of flavors and a gentle grip that keeps you coming back for more.
  • Florez | ‘Peg Leg’ Chardonnay - A supremely delicious Sonoma-style Chardonnay. Dry, yet creamy with a firm citrus, stone fruit, and leaven bread depth. Half of the grapes were directly pressed, and half were foot trodden - hence the name, 'Peg Leg'

Fun Facts About Chardonnay

🍇 1. Chardonnay is a winemaker’s canvas.
Chardonnay is often called a "winemaker's grape" because it's flavors showcase how it's made - from its climate to its aging, each of the winemaker's decisions brings out different characteristics.

🌍 2. It's grown almost everywhere.
Chardonnay is one of the most widely planted white grapes in the world. From Burgundy to California, South Africa to Australia, it's found in nearly every major wine region.

🧈 3. Love it creamy? Thank malolactic fermentation.
That creamy - almost buttery - flavor that many associate with Chardonnay comes from a process called malolactic fermentation. The winemaker can allow a secondary fermentation where sharp malic acid (the kind found in green apples) is converted into softer lactic acid (like what's in milk)

🍏 4. Lean and Bright? Try a Chablis!
If you're looking for a crisp and refreshing style of Chardonnay - look for one without oak aging - often found in Chablis or cooler regions. These tend to be bright, acidic, and mineral-driven.

🍾 5. It’s one of the main grapes in Champagne.
Chardonnay is one of three main grapes used to make traditional Champagne (alongside Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier). 'Blanc de Blanc' Champagnes are made entirely from Chardonnay.

🧀 6. It’s a food pairing chameleon.
Because Chardonnay can range from lean and citrusy to rich and full-bodied, it pairs with a wide array of foods - think shellfish, roast chicken, creamy pastas, and even popcorn!

💫 7. It had a wild rise in the ’80s.
Chardonnay was the “it” white wine of the 1980s. It became so popular that some people started rejecting it entirely, giving rise to the “ABC” crowd: Anything But Chardonnay. But, while many trends come and go, Chardonnay is here to stay!
