Calce (the village where this wine comes from) lies at the foot of the mighty Pyrenees, within striking distance of the Spanish border. Though technically part of France, Calce is not French—it is Catalan. “Mar i Muntanya” (meaning “sea and Mountains” in Catalan) combines Syrah, Carignan with a splash of Grenache. Semi-carbonic maceration (in the style of a Beaujolais Nouveau) gives this wine a certain lift and fruity exuberance not often found in the more intensely structured wines of the south. This wine has both a bright friendly spirit and a rich dark core.

Delicious With

Great with tapas, like dry-cured meat and sausages, Serrano ham, olives, nuts, Spanish cheeses like Manchego. Try with Moroccan-influenced dishes like stuffed tomatoes, tagine with prunes, and couscous.

Their Cred

Although Calce has been renowned for its wine since the Knights Templar wrote admiringly about it in the 9th century, wines from this remote corner of southern France are still relatively unknown and underappreciated.
