Easily a favorite Sauvignon Blanc from California – and beyond. Husband and wife team, Ali and Eric Story, have been our wine-biz muse and winemaker crush for a while now. Their style is so in tune with this grape variety’s potential – they have managed to make a Sauv Blanc that tastes typical of three regions in the same glass: California (bursting with fruit), France (more minerality and earthiness), and New Zealand (tropical fruit and tart, mouth puckering, thirst-quenching acidity). This Sauv Blanc is the fastest travel around the world – satisfyingly complete.

Ali and Eric love to cook and are damn good at it. It’s best to share one of their recipes for this Sauv Blanc – it’ll likely inspire other ideas once you see how well these ingredients pair – and it’s a perfect-for-Spring recipe to try at home.

Mediterranean Zucchini Salad


• 4-6 cups of quartered zucchini

• 10-20 Niçoise pitted olives (yes, make sure they are Niçoise!)

• 1 fresh round of Burrata cheese (can sub with Feta)

• 1 lemon

• 1/2 cup of chopped fresh basil

• 2 tablespoons of olive oil 

• pinch of salt for steaming water


Clean and quarter zucchini. Place in a skillet with a thin layer of boiling water (add pinch of salt), steam until tender. Remove zucchini to cool on platter. Dice Niçoise olives, sprinkle over zucchini while cooling on platter. Pull pieces of burrata cheese and place on top of zucchini and olives on platter. Squeeze a little fresh lemon juice over platter. Sprinkle on freshly-chopped basil. Drizzle olive oil. Refrigerate for at least 15 minutes to cool. (Mix any leftover ingredients with fresh pasta served hot!). Enjoy!

Christine met Ali in the wine business in Austin, TX in the early 2000s. At the time, Ali had started one of the first female-founded wine brokerage companies in the business. She specialized in wines from all over the world: France, Argentina, California, and sake from Japan (which started Christine’s obsession with sake, but that’s a different story). Ali met her now husband, Eric, then the buyer for K & L Wines, and a Bay-area authority in wine retail. In 2014 they launched a Kickstarter for their winery and were fully funded in 30 days. Later that year,  along with their dear Goldendoodle, Lord Sandwich, Ali founded a non-profit Socks For Sandwich, which donates new socks to those in need. Smith Story Wines are made with respect for the land, kindness for the grower and, love from the winemaker. Each vineyard they work with is family-owned. Their wines are classic, showcasing what these grapes can taste like if well-crafted. Also, Ali and Eric do everything, literally everything, themselves from winemaking to running the tasting room, wine club, and sales. True triple threats and really good people.
