Unmistakably Cabernet Sauvignon aroma jumps out of the glass! Specifically, Napa Cabernet at its best. Dusty tannins, beautifully smooth mouthfeel, lively bright fruit – especially for its age! This wine has a decade of age on it and is perfectly ready to be enjoyed. Founded in 1982, this prestigious Oak Knoll vineyard supplied Cabernet Sauvignon grapes to some of Napa’s most cult wineries (Duckhorn, Robert Mondavi, and Far Niente) until 1996, when Georg decided to bottle their own wines from the estate vineyards.
Due to the 10 years of age on this wine, it really begs for long, slow-cooked dishes. Great with braised beef, slow-cooked lamb shank, and even chicken thighs braised in a Dutch oven. The fruit character on the wine can pair nicely with a wide range of harder alpine cheeses like Gruyère or Emmenthaler, or with softer bloomy rind cheeses like Camembert or Brie.
Pere et Fils (translates from French into Father and Son) was established by Georg and Rosie Rafael with the purchase of 50 acres of land in the early 1980s in the southern part of the Napa Valley (in what is now the Oak Knoll district). A long time family friend, Frank Farella (of Farella Family Winery) originally introduced them to this property. When they purchased this site, the land was being used for grazing cattle. They immediately planted grapes (today 23 acres are planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and 2 acres of original vines are still planted to Chardonnay). This is one of the older Napa producers still under the radar. It’s all still in the family - today Marc, son of Georg, is the sole proprietor of Rafael et Fils.
