This is a collector’s wine for the purist. This wine is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and that’s surprisingly rare for a top end Cab. This isn’t to say that there is anything wrong with blending Cabernet Sauvignon with other varietals or the practice of blending itself. In fact, some of the most revered wines in the world are blends of Cabernet Sauvignon from the renowned region of Bordeaux, France. That’s reason #1 of about 100 to fall in love with this bottle and producer.
A wine like this has some crazy tannins that make it both great for aging (tannins are a natural preservative) and a perfect pairing with protein or fat. So, it’s true what they say about big red wines, Cab in this case, pairing well with hearty meats. This is insanely good with a steak and even better if you up the ante with a fully loaded burger (insert fried egg, bacon, or both).
The Hawkes family has been growing Cabernet Sauvignon grapes on the same Alexander Valley vineyard for over 40 years. Family-run means that the founder, owner, and vineyard manager, Stephen Hawkes is still hands-on. His son, Jacob Hawkes is the winemaker. There’s a great story about his return to the family business, so ask us about it. And his daughter, Giannina Hawkes runs everything else. It’s as family run as it gets!
