This wine comes from vines planted in the volcanic soils of a tropical, sunny climate. You can taste the intensity of porous rock and salt. A wine made for the outdoors – earthy truffle and rich blackberry topped with a peppermill full of black and white peppercorns. This tastes straight from the earth, like fresh tree bark and forest floor. This traditional red blend hails from a very dramatic landscape in Tenerife, the largest and most central of the seven Canary Islands located off the coast of Morocco, although technically a part of Spain.
Killer with a peppered steak. This wine begs for hearty proteins – beef, lamb, ribs, anything with some grip to it. The incredible cracked pepper and brininess, along with the plush fruit makes a wonderful complement to big flavors like BBQ sauce or dry rubs. You may also just want to try this late-night around the campfire or patio firepit for a taste of the outdoors.
“I learned with my father Miguel Monje (1916-1999) the traditional production process of this unusual and characteristic wine: the mixture of the three grapes fermented in the old winery, the treading, the racks… I continue to respect the way of fermenting and aging in the old oak and chestnut barrels because that is the family’s personal stamp since 1750.
It is now my turn today to uphold the family tradition. I am the fifth generation of Monjes whose vocation lies in the fascinating world of wine… every single bottle we produce is the living proof of our family’s hard work and the spirit that guides us.” – Filipe Monje
