It’s both rich and cheerful, with a deeply satisfying mouth-coating dryness that also somehow stays bright. Beautifully perfumed Syrah – almost taking a note from the peony flowers on the label – with a plush dark cherry core. Named for winemaker Ali Smith's bravery through a harrowing battle with breast cancer in 2021. Ali picked these grapes, foot-stomped them, and let them naturally ferment in a process called carbonic maceration. Her vision was to make a wine that was both dark and light, deep with Syrah intensity, with a levity that gets you through to the next sip. Only 80 cases made.

Their Cred

Founder, Christine, met Ali in the wine business in Austin, TX in the early 2000s. At the time, Ali had started one of the first female-founded wine brokerage companies in the business. She specialized in wines from all over the world: France, Argentina, California, and sake from Japan (which started Christine’s obsession with sake, but that’s a different story). Ali met her now husband, Eric, then the buyer for K & L Wines, and a Bay-area authority in wine retail. In 2014 they launched a Kickstarter for their winery and were fully funded in 30 days. Later that year,  along with their dear Goldendoodle, Lord Sandwich, Ali founded a non-profit Socks For Sandwich, which donates new socks to those in need. Smith Story Wines are made with respect for the land, kindness for the grower and, love from the winemaker. Each vineyard they work with is family-owned. Their wines are classic, showcasing what these grapes can taste like if well-crafted. Also, Ali and Eric do everything, literally everything, themselves from winemaking to running the tasting room, wine club, and sales. True triple threats and really good people.
