1950’s Blackberry pie

A true diamond in the rough! From vines dating back to the 1950’s, this wine is dense with plump plum, date, and blackberry goodness. It’s straight up blackberry pie with a seductive filling only a recipe from the 50’s can achieve. Winemaker, Nathan Kandler, is crafting his passion-project wines under this label, Precedent.  His day job is Associate Winemaker at Thomas Fogarty in the Santa Cruz making Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, but in his spare time he passionately searches for super old vines in a region called Lodi. Known more for their bulk wines, this region is also home to some of the best forgotten outcroppings of old vine Zinfandel and Chenin Blanc in the country.

Lodi, California

Delicious With

Beautiful with BBQ, sweet and spicy foods, smoked cheeses and tangy flavors, but is also easy to enjoy on its own. It’s happy to be the meal in your glass, but also complements the richness of sausages, pulled pork, and hard cheeses like Cheddar, Manchego, or Gruyere.

Their Cred

Born and raised in Lansing, MI, Nathan attended the University of Michigan, studying Political Science. After a summer bartending and catching the wine ‘bug’, Nathan hopped on a plane, moved 2000 miles to the west and finished his BS in Enology at CSU Fresno. After working for multiple wineries in Northern California and for the famed Torbreck Winery in the Barossa Valley, Australia, he is currently the Associate Winemaker at Thomas Fogarty Winery & Vineyards in Santa Cruz. Nathan has a keen eye for finding the magical combination of variety, climate and soil. He is drawn to the lesser famed region of California called Lodi for it’s old vines plantings, rocky and well drained sites with climates particularly suited to Zinfandel, Chenin Blanc, and Carignan. With a true natural winemaking approach, he uses only native yeasts, whole cluster fermentations, minimal sulfur and well-seasoned French and Slovenian Oak. Precedent is Nathan's first independent project.
