Broc Cellars | 'SOGI' Cabernet Pfeffer
A sunny kind of Cabernet
This obscure grape planted in tiny quantities (only 12 acres) in Northern California, is the perfect warm-weather Cabernet. Thought to be a cross between Cabernet Sauvignon and possibly another French grape called Trousseau, this wine is slightly lighter than its Cabernet cousin, with bold black cherry and a hint of pepper – one with both punch and zip. Thought to have been bred in the late 19th Century, by orchardist and winemaker William Pfeffer, the grape was either named after its creator, or for its spicy characteristics ("Pfeffer" is German for pepper).
FUN FACT: SOGI is a nickname for where the vineyard is located in relation to the winery. Broc Cellars is located in the Gilman district of Berkeley. The vineyard is located South of Gilman – hence SOGI!
